Malaysia's state-owned oil company Petronas may consider relocating its Canadian liquefied natural gas export terminal project, state news agency Bernama said, quoting chairman Mohamad Sidek Hassan.

He was quoted on Monday saying the company would relocate the $27 billion Pacific NorthWest LNG project if the Canadian authorities find the move necessary.

Petronas holds a majority stake in the project, which has come under fire from environmental groups and aboriginal communities who say it will increase greenhouse gas emissions and destroy a critical salmon habitat.

Reports last month said that Petronas had identified a new location for the plant to cut costs and address environmental concerns.
