Saudi Arabia’s decision to allow women to drive should give a major boost to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s plan to transform the economy and reduce its reliance on oil.

Only one in five women are currently active in the workforce, compared with an average close to 40 percent across the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council, according to the International Labour Organization. Giving women driving licenses would help unlock an underutilized resource and spur productivity, incomes and growth, said Mohamed Abu Basha, an economist at regional investment bank EFG-Hermes.
