China is set to more than double its oil and natural gas pipeline network over the next decade as it looks to diversify its coal-dominated energy mix.
Local media cited a report by the country’s National Development & Reform Commission (NDRC) as saying China’s oil and gas pipeline network would reach 240,000 kilometres by 2025, up from 112,000 kilometres in 2015.
"The expansion of China's oil and gas pipelines will substantially boost the country's energy security while ensuring its energy diversification," local newspaper China Daily quoted deputy head of the NDRC's basic industries section, Zheng Jian, as saying.
"The newly constructed pipelines will help connect the south and north, east and west, while linking the sector's upstream and downstream, meeting the emerging demand for cleaner energy and expanding the usage of natural gas."
According to the NDRC, China’s natural gas pipeline network reached 64,000 kilometres in 2015 and is expected to grow to 163,000 kilometres by 2025.
Meanwhile the nation’s crude oil and refined oil networks reached 27,000 kilometres and 21,000 kilometres, respectively, in 2015 and are expected to grow to 37,000 kilometres and 40,000 kilometres by 2025.
According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, pipelines for refined oil will reach all cities with a population of 1 million or above, while those with more than 500,000 residents will have access to natural gas pipelines.
